STAP provides special equipment to assist Texas residents who find it difficult or impossible to use a standard telephone – people with:

• Hearing loss or deafness
• Vision loss or blindness
• Speech problems
• Memory loss or other cognitive difficulties
• Physical limitations: difficulty dialing, mobility loss

Equipment and services are available to make using the telephone easy again!

 

The Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS), issues a voucher to eligible individuals for purchasing the needed specialized equipment. Equipment is free except for optional features or shipping charges, if any.

(For example: a cordless amplified telephone with an answering machine and two handsets costs about $20 more than the state maximum.)
