Assistive Devices Demonstration Center Minimize

Can you hear your baby cry? Your telephone ring? Your doorbell? Alarm clock? Kitchen timer? Smoke alarm? If not, a signaling device can alert you to these vital sounds.

Can you hear to converse well in a moving automobile, in a restauraunt, or in family gatherings? Can you understand speakers in classrooms, in houses of worship, or in meetings? Do you turn the TV up too loud for other people in the room? An assistive listening device can make a huge difference.

Assistive devices can allow a person with hearing loss to live more easily and independently. Our technology assistance program includes the display and demonstration of a variety of assistive devices: visual alerting devices, telephone devices, and listening devices for special situations. This program allows people to see and try out some of the products in order to determine which ones best fit their needs.

When Hearing Aids Are Not Enough Minimize

“I can hear you, but I don’t understand what you’re saying,” is a frequent complaint. About 9% of the total U.S. population has a hearing loss. The percentage increases dramatically with age – about 15% of everyone age 65 and older. Baby boomers, who were often exposed to high levels of noise, have an increasing incidence of hearing difficulties.

Hearing loss can be isolating because it creates communication difficulties. Many people tend to withdraw because it can be so frustrating trying to understand what others say to them. It doesn’t have to be that way. Appropriate technology can restore a person’s independence and effectiveness. And it’s not necessarily expensive.

Modern hearing aids are a wonderful help for many people with hearing loss. But they don’t work in all situations and with all people. Other devices and strategies are helpful in many situations (Hearing aids generally amplify everything – not just the sounds or voices you want to hear.)

In recent years, new technology has developed products which can assist in those difficult communication situations. Most of these devices fall into one of these five categories:

TELEPHONE DEVICES

  • Provide amplification of the voice of to the individual.
  • Provide a visual display of the verbal message.

PERSONAL COMMUNICATION DEVICES

  • Provide sound amplification for one to one communication, especially in noisy places.

TV, RADIO, STEREO DEVICES

  • Provide extra amplification of the sound to the individual.
  • Provide captioning of the audio portion of a TV show.

LARGE AREA LISTENING SYSTEMS

  • Provide personal amplification to individuals in large group settings, such as classrooms, meetings, and worship assemblies.

SIGNALING DEVICES

  • Provide amplified sound or a visual or tactile (vibrating) signal for sound sources such as alarms, doorbells, ringing telephones, or crying babies.
